Phonica Special Editions’ first release for 2013 comes courtesy of new signing Sad City. Northern Irish born, Glasgow-based Gary Caruth might not be a household name just yet, but with an EP on cult US imprint Underwater Peoples already under his belt, it's safe to say he's destined for great things.
His release for our Special Editions offshoot, is a magnificent four tracker of swirling synths, subtle detailing and melodic bliss. It kicks off with the reverb-drenched, hazy atmospherics of “Polymath” and the trippy glockenspiel-inspired melodies of “Easing” which recalls some of Four Tet's early output (definitely a good thing in our books!). Then it's straight over to the dream-like 10 minute journey that is “What I Talk About”, with the EP rounded off perfectly with the Steve Reich-esque title track, “You Will Soon Find That Life Is Wonderful”.
The EP is packaged in wonderful artwork by acclaimed London designer Jack Featherstone." MORE ABOUT MUSIC
Her sister named Alejandra Del Pilar Iglesias Rivera Dinky at birth. Born and raised in Santiago, Chile, as a child she studied Ballet and the Suzuki method of piano before relocating to New York to become a contemporary dancer. Her drive to make music brought her to Berlin a decade ago where she quickly became a dominant force in dance music, making her mark through releases on Carpark, Cocoon, Ostgut, and the critically acclaimed ‘Anemik’ album in 2009 on Mathew Jonson´s Wagon Repair. Her fifth studio album, ‘Dimension D’ sees her evolve into singer-songwriter and performer and take on a new musical direction. Long term friends with the Visionquest collective from their hedonistic days residing in Berlin, Dinky’s fresh approach fits within their ethereal and otherworldly style and follows the Footprintz album earlier this year.
Consistently on point DJ and musician Matthew Styles coproduced and mixed ‘Dimension D’ and will perform the album live in a series of dates this summer. French DJ/Producer and prolific remixer Pépé Bradock has been an enigmatic figure on the scene since the early 90s always essential listening for anyone into deep house with a magic off kilter touch." Andres’ stripped down affair delivers a heavy kick offset with the Detroit native’s signature cut up strings and a funky walking bass. Alex and Chris layer percussive elements over a rich backdrop of vibes and naturalistic atmosphere to create a sumptuous and lush rework perfectly at home on the label. Justin Imperiale’s remix is equally at home on Yoruba, focusing on powerful syncopated rhythms and swelling synth stabs to create a big, immersive remix packed with fuzzy emotions.
Berlin based Oskar Offermann finishes off proceedings with his stunningly hard-edged remix focused intently on the dance floor. The original melody line sits perfectly on a bed of subtle, dark stings and stabs of electronic noise to create those ghostly dance floor moments." DISCOTHEQUE WRECKERS
Bristling with psychedelic, cosmic and curiously Balearic oddities hand-picked from the depths of their vast record collections, Magik Sunrise is, if anything, even more inspired that its predecessor. Given that Magik Cyrkles was widely considered to be one of the best compilations of 2012, that's some feat. That collection garnered praise across the board, appearing in the end-of-year charts of Rough Trade, Juno and Piccadilly Records. As if that wasn't enough, DJ magazine also described it as "f***ing great!"
The public seemed to agree with their assessment. The limited-edition gatefold, double-vinyl edition of the collection sold out within two days and now changes hands for upwards of £50 on Discogs. For Magik Sunrise, the Kent-based duo has dug even deeper into the dusty corners of their record vault, deep in the Cosmic Forest. The result is another inspired, 15-track collection that gleefully skips between all manner of forgotten gems and little-known nuggets, occasionally stopping to acclaim an otherwise unknown track or artist.
Off-kilter African reggae (Max Adioa) nestles side by side with eyes-closed deep-jazz funk (Rob Mehl, George Oban), while the stoned, Balearic prog rock of Jeff Liberman jostles for position with the Steve Miller Band-on-valium goodness of Fox's "The Juggler". Then there's the Roxy Music-ish grooves of Joey Newman, the drifting new age ambience of Iasos (whose "Formentera Sunset Clouds", from the 1975 album "Inter-Dimensional Music", is a highlight) and the folksy bliss of Yves Simon.
Artists originally ignored first time round, such as Daniel Mathieu, Cherubin, Susana Estrada and Steve & Teresa, are given a place in the spotlight. In fact, Leng spent a considerable amount of time tracking down each artist, allowing them to tell their stories, give the inside history of each track and relive their musical adventures - however previously obscure or overlooked. "A lot of these artists have been hidden from the music industry for some time," says Leng's Simon Purnell. "Us finding them has proved to be a big deal for them, because these tracks were very important to them and this album has brought back their memories of that time."
Their wares, from misty-eyed acoustic rock to slowed-down blue-eyed soul, sound sublime in Psychemagik's new setting. As ever with Leng and Claremont 56, much attention has been paid to the artwork and packaging. Long-time Psychemagik collaborator, acclaimed illustrator Luke Insect, once again handles design duties. His illustration - part pagan, part medieval alchemy, part prog rock revivalism - effortlessly matches the wide-eyed mood of Psychemagik's brilliant selections." So this one is truly a matter of the music doing the talking, and with the reggaefied dubness of ‘Can’t Kick This Feeling When It Dubs’ and the vintage Theo Parrish-styled ‘Tonight Tomorrow’ the music will well and truly talk to a lot of music lovers."

In 'Panorama Bar 05' we find a mature and confident Steffi channeling her years of experience as a record collector, DJ and beat-maker into 80 seamless minutes. Reflecting all the angles of her classically inspired, raw and profoundly warm sound, we are guided through a rather grand lesson in House music.
Opening with the gliding tones and field recordings of Palisade's '18:30' - a Redshape-produced space-out cut, Steffi initially expresses her love of earthy, organic and submerged club tracks, with Big Strick's 'Hayday' transmitted direct from Detroit (an exclusive on the 12'' sampler), and the classic depths of Chris Mitchell's 'Lonely Nights'.
Another brand new track recruited by Steffi for the mix, the technoid-Chicago sound of Fred P stands out in the beautifully contemporary 'Project 05' - segueing perfectly with Naoki Shinohara's suitably titled 'Timeless'.
Always leadings us on a surprising journey through contrasting styles, Steffi lights up the mid-section of the mix with pure and positive energy. Juju & Jordash supply their bubbling, ecstatic 'A Stab In The Dark' - another Ostgut Ton exclusive, while congas and gorgeously loose and dusty vibes roll up with 'Reality' from John Barera & Will Martin.
This energy keeps on flowing as Steffi brings in a cut from the inimitable Sex Tags crew - courtesy of DJ Fett Burger - while Juergen Junker's 'Post Reunion' should satisfy any remaining raw-cut-up-disco needs!
Steffi includes her pumping and acidic 'DB011' - one of three exclusives on the mix coming out as a 12" on her 'Dolly' label, alongside with Dexter's classy 'Jawada' and John Barera & Will Martin's contribution.
As the intensity grows in the final half-hour, it's then left to a soaring techno display from Obsolete Music Technology to bring things right up to date, and finally Trevino's 'Juan Two Five' closes the mix, its undulating machine funk easing us down, feeling complete.
Steffi shows off her talents here with a captivating and classy mix of underground House and Techno. All the tracks she included, and the producers she invited to contribute, help to define part of her identity - much like the culture of DJing with records, that she brings to clubs with love, intensity and passion.

A sleazy slice of 70's funk with hints of latin, the two vocalists, better known as protagonists of a certain type of movie back in the day, make lewd allusions over 3 minutes of percussion driven heat!

He is also a respected producer and although he may not be as prolific as some artists, when he does decide to release his music it is always worth the wait. Less is sometimes more. So we are especially delighted to welcome him to the family here at Hizou Music with the No Beat Left Behind EP that is steeped in the traditions of Detroit techno and Chicago house, that is bursting with raw energy, sonically gritty and an unmistakable authenticity that could only come from someone who was actually there; you can’t fake the feeling.
Dance Demo (Da Give It Mix) is straight-up bumpin’, pumpin’ old-school house at its finest made squarely for the floor; there’s no excuse not to dance. Pray is pure feel-good; brash, bouncy and with more than enough funk. For a truly heavyweight sound that pays homage to the underground scene of the Motor City there is Detroit Shuffle (Quick Step C Mix), while First Love (Latenight Funk Breakdown Mix) is a soulful and chunky groover perfect for the wee small hours." “Sacrifice” is the work of two duos at the top of their production games. Bicep, after their critically acclaimed recent releases on Aus Music and their own Feel My Bicep records, and SMD fresh from promoting their new “Live” album, decamped for a few days to SMD’s London studio to jam out this resulting epic. Built around a deceptively simple, repetitive melody – as all good 4am club music should be – and laid down onto analogue tape, as well as the original two beatless versions were created. Version 1 keeps the original speed, just smearing out the melodies slightly, to make an effective DJ tool. Whereas version 2 takes things to their logical conclusion, setting the tape machine to 7.5 inches per second, and drawing the chords out into a blissed-out piece of ambient wobble."
