History of Phonica Records:
Phonica Records opened in 2003 amidst a wave of closing record stores and fragmented electronic music genres. Founded by Simon Rigg, Tom Relleen, and Heidi Van Den Amstel, with backing from The Vinyl Factory, Phonica aimed to be a hub for all dance and electronic music. Despite a quiet start, it built a strong reputation, partly due to its founders' ties to Koobla Records.
Phonica quickly became known for championing new genres like electro house and minimal from German labels such as Kompakt and Playhouse. In 2007, Phonica launched its record label, initially featuring its DJ and producer staff. It soon became a platform for new artists like Peggy Gou and Midland, as well as established names like Four Tet. By 2024, Phonica had expanded with several sub-labels, each with its own musical direction.
