Mdou Moctar is one of the leading lights of electrified Tuareg music, whose rise to popularity was enabled by trading of tracks via cellphones in the Sahel region. He first came under scrutiny in the west when he appeard on Sahel Sounds’ legendary compilation Music from Saharan Cellphones: Volume 1. He has since released three LPs for Sahel Sounds, and been touring constantly.
