Lisbon's Photonz, whose remix skills transformed Almaty's "Gennaro" last year (NAIVE003), returns to naive with a full EP 'Angel Heart', showcasing a myriad influences from early 90s UK hardcore to Detroit techno. Photonz delivers his signature powerful combination of ruff percussion and synth energy designed to move the crowd. Via the artwork, he shares rave goggle sketches he's drawn in his teen years while dreaming of attending parties or, wildest dream, being a DJ - making things even more personal.
"Angel Heart" takes us through a dystopian landscape, as hardcore breaks and bass come to do damage to sound systems while strings create a sense of mystery. "In A Dream" draws from EBM and electro to create tense rhythmic structure with a massive sub bass punching through anything in its path. Easing the vibe a bit, "Baggy Kru" gives the dance floor a head-bobbing groove with loose percussion and smooth chords.
The title of "Emerald City" might invoke Oz but the sound is definitely Detroit. A stomping 909 and Millsian hi hats drive the beat amidst plucked arpeggios. Closing out the EP, Alamaty returns remix favors for Photonz - this has always been a family affair after all - and takes "Emerald City" to a different place with subdued 303 bass and a drum machine break.
